Offline
Ready for an outage.
Fiber cut, storm, a cabin in the mountains, a long-haul flight… Séance keeps everything it needs on your Mac — information, artwork, thumbnails, even its AI — so your library stays beautiful and playable for weeks without a connection.
Without a connection
Everything keeps working.
Once a title is in your library, nothing about watching it depends on the internet.
-
Browse and search
Your whole library, its rows and collections, and natural-language search.
-
Play every format
MKV, AVI, TS and more through the built-in remux, subtitles included.
-
Resume where you left off
Progress and My List, kept for each profile.
-
Profiles and kids mode
“Who’s watching?”, and a kids mode that only shows what suits them.
-
Apple Intelligence
Recaps, translations and suggestions, computed on your Mac.
-
Skip the intro
Intro markers of the series you’re watching are prepared ahead of time.
-
“Tonight” and collections
Ideas for tonight and automatic collections, all made on your Mac.
-
Posters and backdrops
Saved on your Mac, so they stay even when the drive is unplugged.
-
Ambient mode
A full-screen slideshow of your artwork.
Online, just once
The internet is only a supplier.
Séance goes online for a few tasks, only when it can — and keeps whatever it fetches on your Mac.
Uses the internet
- Identifying a new title and fetching its information and artwork (TVmaze and iTunes, or TMDB with your free key)
- Downloading Séance and its updates
- The Apple Intelligence model, downloaded once by macOS (about 7 GB)
Never needs it
- Playing and resuming
- Browsing and search
- Profiles, kids mode and My List
- Apple Intelligence features
- “Tidy my files” and duplicates
- Copying titles to this Mac
No connection when you add a video? It plays right away, with thumbnails made on your Mac. Its information and artwork arrive on their own once the network is back.
- Info
- Posters & backdrops
- Thumbnails
Settings › Library
One panel tells you exactly where you stand.
“Ready for an outage” sums up what will still work without the internet — and without your external drives.
-
Three readiness rings
Identified info, posters and backdrops, thumbnails — each with an exact count, like “1,120 of 1,156”.
-
A clear status
“Everything is ready”, “Almost ready” or “Preparation recommended” — and while it works, “Preparing images — 12 left”.
-
Playable without an external drive
How many titles live on this Mac, and how many on external drives.
-
Every folder and drive
Internal or external, plugged in or not, number of titles, free space, last scan.
-
Alerts that matter
An unplugged drive, a missing folder, titles without info or artwork, missing thumbnails, low disk space, a folder never scanned.
“Prepare everything”
One click, while the internet is still there.
Before a trip or a forecast storm, a single button fills every gap.
- 01
Information and artwork
Whatever hasn’t been fetched yet is fetched now.
- 02
Thumbnails
Episode and video thumbnails are made on your Mac — even in Offline mode.
- 03
Intros
Intro markers of the series you’re watching are prepared, so “Skip intro” works offline.
- 04
My List, on your Mac
Tick “Also bring My List to this Mac”: titles of My List stored on an external drive are copied to your Mac, with their size shown first. For a channel, only the next episodes to watch — ten at most.
Settings › Metadata
Offline mode: not a single request.
One switch and Séance stops using the internet altogether. Lookups in progress stop at once, and only what’s already saved on your Mac is shown.
-
Zero network
On a plane, on a phone hotspot or on a capped connection.
-
AI included
Apple Intelligence runs on the device, so it keeps working in Offline mode.
-
Back online
Switch it off and Séance fetches whatever it set aside.
On the road
Leave the drive at home.
Your library lives on an external drive? Take what you’ll watch with you.
-
“Bring to this Mac”
Copy a film, an episode or a whole season to your Mac, after a free-space check. Your progress follows.
-
My List, ready to go
“Prepare everything” can copy My List to your Mac in the same click.
-
No surprises
With a drive unplugged, the panel tells you how many titles are unavailable.
Before you leave
Five steps before the outage.
-
Plug in your drives
Connect every drive you’ll want and let Séance finish its scan.
-
Open the panel
Réglages › Bibliothèque › “Prêt pour la coupure” (Settings › Library › Ready for an outage).
-
Prepare everything
Click “Tout préparer” (Prepare everything). Leaving the drive behind? Tick “Rapatrier aussi Ma liste sur ce Mac” (Also bring My List to this Mac).
-
Wait for 100%
Once the rings are full, the panel says “Tout est prêt” (Everything is ready).
-
Cut the cord — optional
Turn on “Mode hors ligne” (Offline mode) in Réglages › Métadonnées (Settings › Metadata).
Unplug. Take off. The show goes on.
Offline questions
Do I have to turn on Offline mode?
No. Without a connection, Séance simply uses what’s saved on your Mac. The switch is for when you want zero network use — on a plane, on a phone hotspot — or to be sure nothing gets downloaded.
What about videos I add while offline?
They’re added and play right away, with thumbnails made on your Mac. Their information and artwork are fetched automatically once the connection is back.
How much space does it take?
Information and artwork take little room: Réglages › Métadonnées (Settings › Metadata) shows their size and can clean up unused images. Copying titles to your Mac uses their own size — Séance shows it and checks free space first.
Does Apple Intelligence work without the internet?
Yes. It runs on your Mac once macOS has downloaded its model (about 7 GB), on a compatible Mac with Apple Intelligence turned on.
