The basics
What is Séance?
A Mac app that turns the videos on your drives — movies, series, family videos — into a beautiful library in the spirit of the Apple TV app. It fetches posters, synopses and cast once, then works entirely offline.
Does Séance give me access to movies?
No. Séance is not a streaming service: it organizes and plays the videos you already own, stored on your drives. No catalog is included.
Does it really work without the internet?
Yes. The internet is only used to fetch information the first time. After that, everything lives on your Mac: browse, search, play, resume and get suggestions with no connection at all, for as long as you need.
Before a planned outage, the “Ready for an outage” panel checks that nothing is missing and fills any gaps in one click.
What language is the app in?
Séance’s interface is in French only for now. Titles and synopses are fetched in French when available, otherwise in English. The 14-day free trial lets you check it suits you before buying.
What do I need to run it?
macOS 26 or later, on a Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later): Intel-based Macs aren’t supported. Apple Intelligence features need a compatible Mac with Apple Intelligence turned on. See the requirements.
Library & playback
Which video formats are supported?
MP4, MOV and M4V play directly. MKV, AVI, TS, M2TS, WebM, WMV, MPEG, VOB and many more go through a built-in, on-the-fly remux: no conversion beforehand, no copies. Multiple audio tracks are supported, as are SRT subtitles, embedded or next to the file.
My videos live on an external drive or a NAS. Will that work?
Yes: internal drives, external drives and network shares. An unplugged drive stays visible, simply dimmed; plug it back in, even on another port, and it’s found again automatically. Before a trip, “Bring to this Mac” copies a film or a whole season to your Mac, progress included.
My files are badly named. Will Séance cope?
Most likely. Séance understands common file names (title, year, season, episode, quality, language tags), season folders and .nfo files. A misidentified title is fixed in two clicks with “Fix identification”.
If you like, “Tidy my files” renames and sorts everything neatly, with a before-and-after preview and an Undo button.
How does Séance detect intros and end credits?
On your Mac, offline: using the file’s chapters when there are some, and by comparing the audio fingerprints of episodes in the same season. You can also mark the end of an intro yourself; Séance remembers it for the next episodes.
Is my library safe when Séance updates?
Yes. Before each update, Séance automatically backs up your library, progress and lists — and keeps those backups — then migrates them without loss.
Does Séance sync between my Macs?
Coming soon. Syncing progress and My List between your Macs is in the works.
Apple Intelligence
Do I need Apple Intelligence?
No, Séance is fully featured without it. If your Mac supports it and Apple Intelligence is turned on, you also get “Previously…” recaps, synopses translated into French and finer suggestions.
Is my data sent anywhere for AI?
No. Séance uses the Apple Intelligence model installed on your Mac: everything runs on device, and Séance sends nothing for these features.
Purchase & license
What does the free trial include?
Every feature, for 14 days, with no credit card and no account. After that, a lifetime license unlocks Séance for good. Your videos and data stay untouched on your Mac.
What does “lifetime license” mean?
You pay once, $10, and Séance is yours: no subscription, no renewal. Séance updates are included. Read the license agreement.
How many Macs can I install it on?
All your personal Macs, for you and your household.
How does payment work?
Payment is handled by Paddle, our authorized reseller, which accepts cards and the main payment methods and sends you the invoice, taxes included. Your license key arrives by email right away.
What if Séance isn’t for me?
Try it free for 14 days first. After buying, you still have 30 days to ask for a full refund, no questions asked: just write to [email protected].
Why isn’t Séance on the Mac App Store?
Séance is distributed as a direct download, signed and notarized by Apple. That lets it reach your drives and folders freely, and lets you buy it once, at a single price.
Privacy
What does Séance know about me?
Nothing. No account, no analytics, no ads. Your files and your watch history stay on your Mac. To find information, Séance only sends titles and years to TMDB, TVMaze, iTunes, Wikidata and Wikipedia. Privacy policy.
Can my kids use Séance?
Yes. Everyone in the family gets a profile with their own progress and list. Kids mode only shows children’s titles and hides the settings.
Your cinema awaits.
Try Séance free for 14 days with every feature. Then $10, once, forever.
